Junior High Band Syllabus

2015-2016 Concert Schedule:

All students are expected to be at all concerts.  If you miss a concert, you will be asked to do a make-up assignment.  Concerts are the “final test” in band, and we need to all be present to make the concert great!  If you have a conflict with any of these dates, please your parents communicate it to me by THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3rd.


Concert Attire

The first impression we make on our audience is how we look.  We will all wear long black pants and black shoes.  Socks must be long dress socks.  Girls pants can’t be skin tight.  That means NO LEGGINGS and NO YOGA PANTS.  Shoes must be close toed dress shoes.  You will be provided a t-shirt to wear for concerts.  Failure to comply with dress code will result in automatically earning a “B” grade on your concert.


Pep Band

We will be playing at 16 games this year.  All 7-12 band students will be asked to sign up for half of the games per quarter to earn grade points and lettering points.  The purpose of the sign-up is to ensure we have proper instrumentation at all events.  Students who are in multiple sports and activities that conflict with pep band will be given make-up assignments to complete by the end of quarter 3.   Any extra games attended will go towards lettering points and extra A and I points.

*****Although you are only required to be at half of the pep bands, if you are at the game anyway, you should be playing! We need as many people as possible at each event!

*****All students are required to be at Coronation and Homecoming, any in-school pep rallies, and any tournament games.  I understand there are certain exceptions to this.  Please come and talk to me if you aren’t able to make the required games.

**** Please wear your pep band t-shirt-especially to tournament games-you will have to pay admission to these if you do not wear your shirt.

Grading Procedures

Daily Contribution: (25%)

Band Class:

Band is a group activity in that it takes each and every one of us to produce great music together.  This being the case, your attendance in rehearsal every time we have band is expected and is worth 3 points.

Daily Participation:

Students have the opportunity to earn 3 participation points for each large group rehearsal.

Students who earn 3 points will have the following:

  • Pencil – They are subject to random pencil checks at my discretion.
  • Folder with all band music
  • Instrument in proper playing condition (Students will not be penalized if their instrument is being repaired, but they will need to let me know ahead of time so we can find another instrument for them to use or come up with another plan.)
  • Proper cleaning materials for their instrument

And, this means they will do the following:

  • Enter the classroom, put their instrument together, warm up appropriately or listen to our listening sample for the day quietly, and be in their seat, ready to play when Mr. Elker steps on the podium.
  • Participate in a positive manner – respect others, demonstrate understanding of classroom expectations, set a good example for peers, sit with great posture and give a full effort.
  • Ask questions if they are confused – asking questions is a great way to learn.

 A & I Sheet-Applying and Improving Musicianship (25%)


This year, students in the High School Band will be required to complete an A & I sheet each quarter.  Just like every other class, you'll need to do work outside of class to improve.  This assignment will display how you improve as a musician outside of band rehearsals.  This can include a number of items listed on the A & I Sheet.


Assessments-Playing and Written: (50%)

Just like any class, you will be assessed on your progress in the class.  In Band, we do that through the use of lessons and playing tests.  Some playing tests will be live, and others will be recorded.  When I assign a playing test, you will either record the playing test on your phone or other recording device and submit it to me, or you can play it for me live on your instrument.  If you do not like the score you receive on any playing test, you always have the option of redoing the playing test until you get a score you like.  Written assessments will be turned in by the due date. 


You will have 8 lessons a semester.  That translates to one lesson every other week.  There will be a sign up on my door every Friday for the following week.  It is your responsibility to sign up for a lesson time for whichever week is next for you.  Your grade will be reduced by one letter grade for every lesson you are short at the end of the semester.



Music Mart Lease Policy:

Please contact Music Mart for questions regarding their rental policies (1.800.TUBA.TWO).

School Lease Policy:

If you use a school instrument, you need to pay the $50 rental fee. Percussionists are required to pay a $25 dollar rental fee each year as well.  This is to help us afford maintenance and basic repairs on the school instruments.  If you plan to rent a school instrument this year, please pick up a rental agreement form and have your payment in to me (checks payable to Sleepy Eye Public School) by September 4th. Unfortunately, we do not have enough instruments for all students to use a school instrument, but we will do our best to ensure we can help as many students use school instruments as possible.
